Village School

This was the first Village School and public school in Holmdel. It is on the east side of Holmdel Road, just north of Main Street. It was built in 1841 after The Academy, a private school, burned 1837. This first Village School had two floors. First through fourth grades were taught on the first floor. Fifth through eighth grades were on the second floor.

This window picture shows there was once a second floor, because of the closeness of the windows to the roof. The second floor was taken off when the owners made the school into a garage.

Just down the street is the second Village School at 961 Holmdel Road. It was built in 1904 on one acre of land and closed as a school in 1968. The classes were taught upstairs and the principal’s office was downstairs. There were two classrooms for various grades through the years. The building was used for the Holmdel branch of the Monmouth County Library during the 1970’s. The building is now a law office.

The third and present Village School is located at 67 McCampbell Road and was built in 1964.

In 1968 Holmdel Middle School now called the William R. Satz School opened and Village School became a K to 5 school. The next change was when Village School became the K-4 school for Holmdel. As Holmdel’s population increased fourth and third grades were moved to Indian Hill School.

When the current construction is completed Village School will house all Preschool through third grade programs.
